چکیده

This study applies a production function approach to value the groundwater recharge function of the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands in northern Nigeria. The groundwater recharge function supports dry season agricultural production which is dependent on groundwater abstraction for irrigation. Using survey data this paper first carries out an economic valuation of agricultural production, per hectare of irrigated land. We then value the recharge function as an environmental input into the dry season agricultural production and derive appropriate welfare change measures. Welfare change is calculated using the estimated production functions and hypothetical changes in groundwater recharge and hence, groundwater levels. By focusing on agricultural production dependent solely on groundwater resources from the shallow aquifer, this study establishes that the groundwater recharge function of the wetlands is of significant importance for the floodplain. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. SPECIAL ISSUE THE VALUES OF WETLANDS: LANDSCAPE AND INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVES Approaches to valuing the hidden hydrological services of wetland ecosystems

This paper investigates the role of the production function approach in capturing the value of hydrological services of wetland ecosystems. Hydrological research in the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands in northern Nigeria suggests that the major role of the wet season inundation of the wetlands is in recharging the underlying aquifers. This paper shows that the hydrological services extend beyond direct ...

Environmental Project Evaluation in Developing Countries: Valuing the Environment as Input

The following paper suggests that an important evaluation problem in developing countries is assessing the value and optimal use of environmental resources as inputs into production. Essentially, this amounts to determining the best use of land, water and other resources. The paper outlines the simple methodology behind the general evaluation approach, e.g. ensuring the most efficient use of a ...

Reassortant low-pathogenic avian influenza H5N2 viruses in African wild birds.

To investigate the presence and persistence of avian influenza virus in African birds, we monitored avian influenza in wild and domestic birds in two different regions in Nigeria. We found low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H5N2 viruses in three spur-winged geese (Plectropterus gambensis) in the Hadejia-Nguru wetlands. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that all of the genes, except the non-stru...

Impact of land use and land cover change on groundwater recharge and quality in the southwestern US

Humans have exerted large-scale changes on the terrestrial biosphere, primarily through agriculture; however, the impacts of such changes on the hydrologic cycle are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that the conversion of natural rangeland ecosystems to agricultural ecosystems impacts the subsurface portion of the hydrologic cycle by changing groundwater r...
